Florida State announced on Tuesday that former Stanford and Auburn transfer Ashton Daniels will be named the starting quarterback for the 2026 season. To be honest, this is the worst-kept secret for the Seminoles.
When head coach Mike Norvell addressed the media last week, he said he did not want to announce a starting signal-caller yet, but he added that Daniels had been better than expected and that his vertical passing has improved. When Sperry was brought up, he mentioned that consistency needed to be better for the youngster.
Even when the question wasn't about Daniels but about the overall quarterback room, Norvell still made it a priority to talk about the transfer quarterback. We will see what happens with redshirt freshman Kevin Sperry and JUCO option Malachi Marshall if they stick around for 2027 to compete.
The position battle for the running back is something to keep your eyes on
The quarterback battles get a large majority of the discussion because of the position being the center of attention, but Florida State fans should monitor how the running back position plays out.
Former position coach David Johnson headed to Arkansas this offseason, and Florida State decided to hire Kam Martin as the new running backs coach. The rushers were productive for the Seminoles last year, but fans were frustrated that they were used in a committee approach.
Florida State played Gavin Sawchuk, Ousmane Kromah, Sam Singleton Jr., Caziah Holmes, and Roydell Williams. There were too many mouths to feed. It felt like they gave up on a running back when he was being productive and kept playing musical chairs at the position.
The Seminoles have a similar issue this year, as they have talent littered throughout the roster. There is a real battle going on in the running back room this offseason between Tre Wisner, Ousmane Kromah, Sam Singleton Jr., Gemari Sands, Amari Thomas, and Zay Parks.
Most fans thought that when Wisner was brought in via the portal, he would be listed as the starter at running back, but the coaching staff continues to rave about the play of Ousmane Kromah. The former four-star prospect was someone that the Seminoles wrestled away from the likes of Auburn and Georgia.
Sam Singleton Jr. also cannot be a back that fans forget about, as his explosiveness stands out to change the scoreboard in a hurry. Coach Martin will have plenty of options to choose from as Mike Norvell runs the offensive play-calling duties in 2026.
