ESPN analyst looks to be right so far about the Seminoles' weakness

This stings as a Florida State football fan.

FSU FOOTBALL STRUGGLES

Florida State football has struggled over its past two games against Virginia and Miami. The rivalry matchup against the Hurricanes stung because the contest became a situation where Florida State looked overmatched at times.

However, there are always ways to get better if you are the Seminoles. I recently wrote an article about ESPN analyst Greg McElroy, stating that the biggest question mark for Florida State was its secondary.

Florida State had pieces in its secondary, such as Earl Little Jr., Jerry Wilson, Ja'Bril Rawls, Ashlynd Barker, and Edwin Joseph. Plus, the unit is coached by Patrick Surtain Sr. and Evan Cooper.

WELL... THAT WAS UNFORTUNATE

This was a bold statement because I originally thought the position group as a whole played well against the Crimson Tide in the opener, but Florida State played Miami on Saturday night and tried to eliminate the Hurricanes' ground game.

Quarterback Carson Beck is an experienced option, but he has had his flaws as a collegiate signal-caller. Miami was prone to crumbling under pressure in the big game. However, the Hurricanes got exactly what they wanted: The Seminoles to stack the box and leave their secondary on an island.

Beck took what the defense gave them and completed 20 of his 27 passes for 241 yards and four touchdowns. Wide receivers Malachi Toney and CJ Daniels were difference makers. The pass rush could never get home to the experienced quarterback, and he was able to pick apart the defense because Florida State was leaving its cornerbacks isolated.

Offensive coordinator Shannon Dawson for the Hurricanes highlighted the game plan perfectly in his press conference after the game. This has to be a moment where defensive coordinator Tony White goes back to the drawing board.

It seems like redshirt sophomore Ja'Bril Rawls continues to shine on the field, but the rest of the group has regressed. It looks like Greg McElroy was right in his assessment so far about the Florida State defensive backs. Hopefully, the unit turns it around as the Seminoles take on Pittsburgh in the friendly confines of Doak Campbell Stadium this Saturday.
