The energy is sky high in Tallahassee, Florida. Although the temperatures are still blazing hot, that means it’s a good thing as sports are making a return at Florida State University. Fans cannot wait for the football team’s first game at Doak Campbell Stadium as the Alabama Crimson Tide are rolling into town. Luckily, with football season approaching, that means basketball season is around the corner as well.
Once the weather cools off, fans will start making their way over to the Donald L Tucker Center. It’s a new beginning for the Florida State Men’s Basketball team. New head coach Luke Loucks has big expectations to give the program a new spark as he enters his first season. Throughout the offseason, Loucks has worked relentlessly recruiting new talent who can become a great fit for the Seminoles. One of the newest acquisitions is freshman point guard Cam Miles from IMG Academy.
Some may be familiar with Cam Miles while others are not. For those who have never watched him play, the best thing to do is to trust Coach Loucks’ vision. Miles is a player that fans should be ecstatic to see wear Garnet and Gold. His high school career at IMG Academy was spectacular as he emerged as one of the top point guards in the state of Florida.
What is it that makes Cam Miles special? What are the attributes that make him a great fit for Florida State? Let’s just say that Miles has a competitive spirit that one can’t teach. Every time he steps onto the court, he plays to win. Miles’ energy displays his effort, athleticism, and attention to detail. Don't be surprised if he’s a player who often sets the tone for the Seminoles throughout the season.
The confidence in Cam Miles is what displays his true skill set on the floor. This is a young talent who can be interchangeable offensively. What I mean by that is Miles can play multiple roles for his team. Standing at 6’2, he can play either the point guard or shooting guard positions as he can playmake and score efficiently. The defense is always on its heels when defending Miles because it’s hard to predict what he will do next. He understands his options and picks them well when it comes to scoring or finding his teammates.
Certainly, Florida State fans will love to see Cam Miles score the basketball, as he does so in multiple ways. He’s an efficient perimeter scorer as he can either elevate off the dribble or become a catch-and-shoot player. Miles’ effectiveness from outside the paint forces the defense to find ways of pressuring him. Also, Miles is great at using his strength and quickness to attack driving lanes and finish around the rim. His scoring ability will be beneficial for the Seminoles as they have a guard who can score effectively as well as create open opportunities for others.
Miles is coming to Florida State with momentum on his side. He’s coming off a tremendous senior year at IMG by averaging 17.4 points along with 5.2 assists. His leadership was very impactful as he helped lead IMG as one of the top teams in the country. As his team continued to succeed, that’s when Miles gained more recognition as an elite guard.
With the loss of playmakers like Daquan Davis and Jamir Watkins, the point guard spot is now in the hands of Cam Miles. Although he has big shoes to fill, he is projected to deliver at a high level. As a former point guard himself, Coach Loucks is prepared to put trust in Miles as one of the leaders on the floor. The freshman point guard has the confidence and skill level to help take Florida State basketball in a different direction.
