Auburn's contract for Alex Golesh is something all schools should get behind

I like the incentives.

Auburn firing Huge Freeze and hiring Alex Golesh from USF probably isn’t the splash hiring that some Auburn fans wanted. However, Golesh’s first meeting with the team is exactly what I’d want to hear if I were a player or Athletic Director.

Whether he’ll be able to accomplish all that he said is another story, but there’s got to be a starting point somewhere. The details for his contract emerged on social media on Monday, and I have to say, I’m impressed with how Auburn laid it all out:

Golesh’s base salary will never exceed eight million dollars during his six-year contract. However, he’ll have the opportunity to make a TON of money if he wins there. That’s the part I hope FSU and others would embrace moving forward, instead of providing head extensions.

It’s treating the coaches the same way the players get treated. If you produce, you get paid, and if you don’t, you won’t have a job or make much money. If Golesh wins nine games in year one, he can make a base of $8.25 million. If he wins 10 games, he’d make $8.75 million. If he won 10 games and made the first round of the College Football Playoff? He’d make $9.75 million.

I don’t understand why more teams haven’t gone to this model. If you believe you can coach, develop players, and hire good coaches, why wouldn’t you bet on yourself?

I don't know how much longer Mike Norvell will be at FSU, but whoever the next guy is should get a contract similar to this with a much smaller buyout. The days of getting bent over for millions to pay bad coaches not to coach anymore have to be over.
