As part of sweeping changes to the transfer portal, the NCAA has approved a one-time transfer window that started on July 7 and will close on August 5. Most don't expect many surprising moves to take place during this period, but there willl likely be some attrition on most rosters. Here are five players that could decide to take advantage of this window as training camp gets underway:
RB Caziah Holmes
I understand there was some sentiment here that Holmes might be a guy to watch in Malzahn's offense and if he got a chance, I could potentially see it. But barring a serious rash of injuries he's not going to get many carries with Gavin Sawchuk, Roydell Williams, Kam Davis and likely Ousmane Kromah ahead of him. I could see Holmes deciding to drop to a lower division where he could get a chance to play on a consistent basis in his final year of eligibility.
RB Sam Singleton
Singleton runs into many of the same issues as Holmes - there's just not going to be enough carries for all the backs on the roster. Running back is one of the few positions where FSU has done a good job of recruiting over players during Mike Norvell's tenure, mostly through the portal. The good news for Singleton is that he's just a redshirt sophomore and would have a few different options as a transfer. I wouldn't be surprised to see a G5 school jump on him immediately and offer more carries. That would give Singleton the chance to have a productive season and just back into the transfer market in December if he so chooses. This might simply be a situation where Singleton bets on himself.
TE Markeston Douglas
The relationship between Douglas, affectionately known as 'Biscuit', and FSU is strange. He was here from 2020-2023, then he left to follow former offensive coordinator Kenny Dillingham at Arizona State, and after being part of a playoff team with Arizona State, he came back, went back in the transfer portal in April, only to withdraw his name a day or two later. Douglas is what he is - a big-body athlete that is best served as a tight end in jumbo packages - and maybe he's fine with that. The majority of the offensive snaps are going to go to sophomore Landen Thomas and high-profile transfer Randy Pittman. And if Norvell's talk on Chase Loftin isn't just smoke, the true freshman is in line for more snaps than Douglas. I wouldn't be surprised if Douglas transferred or just decided he was done with football.
DT Jamorie Flagg
Flagg might just be the odd-man out in the defensive line rotation. He was recruited by Odell Haggins to play interior in the old 4-2-5 package, but with the coaching changes at defensive coordinator and changes in the scheme to a 3-3-5, it's possible that new defensive line coach Terrance Knighton just doesn't see the same fit. Flagg is a young prospect, just a redshirt freshman, so he could decide to hang around for the season and re-evaluate his options in the next transfer window.
WR Lawayne McCoy
This one is going to be a little controversial. McCoy has a pretty defined role as a primary punt returner already. So this one might simply come down to whether FSU can provide McCoy with the touches that will make him happy. McCoy found himself on the field quite a bit as a true freshman and was finding some chemistry with FSU quarterbacks Brock Glenn and Luke Kromenhoek. But the offense has changed, the quarterback situation has changed and McCoy quite simply might want a more modern offense that utilizes multiple receivers compared to what we expect from Gus Malzahn's run-heavy attack. Much like Singleton, McCoy could simply decide to bet on himself if he doesn't like where he stands after the first few days of training camp.
