Official visits serve multiple purposes, and one of the biggest is an opportunity for recruits to ask questions of the coaching staff and players in the program. It’s recruiting, so is everything 100 percent truthful? It’s hard to say, but even the most diplomatic answer will reveal at least a shred of truth for a player about to make one of the biggest decisions of their lives.
That is, so long as they're brave enough to ask the tough questions. It seems that three-star Florida State wide receiver target Majay Thompson had no reservations about getting down to brass tacks during his weekend in Tallahassee.
Speaking with Chris Nee of Noles247, Thompson admitted to harbouring concerns about the coaching staff’s stability (how could he not?). "Just about coaching stability and what could happen with the season, if the season was to go bad," Thompson said.
Majay Thompson wasn’t afraid to ask about coaching staff stability in Tallahassee
Mike Norvell has held onto his job after going 7-17 over the last two seasons in large part because of a massive buyout that Florida State has been unwilling to pay. Heading into 2026, it’s seemingly more of a waiting game for that buyout to drop closer to a manageable $50 million mark than a chance for Norvell to turn it around. But that’s not the impression that Thompson got.
"All in all, coach, he's got some more years. Coach (Tim) Harris just got that extension because he's the offensive coordinator. So all in all, everything is good."
In January, Harris, who was hired in 2024 as the passing game coordinator and wide receivers coach, was elevated to co-offensive coordinator, and with that move, his contract was amended to extend through the 2027 season.
That extension pales in comparison to Norvell’s deal, which runs through the 2031 season. Norvell’s buyout at the end of the 2026 season is $51 million and drops to $42.7 million after 2027, if he makes it to that point. That massive pricetag is probably the biggest reason to have any faith that Norvell will be around beyond this year, but it’s safe to say that wasn’t part of Norvell’s pitch to the talented wide receiver recruit from Shelby, North Carolina.
The FanDuel Sportsbook has FSU’s win total set at 6.5 with heavy juice to the under. The Seminoles drew the toughest schedule in the ACC, playing most of the top teams in the league, and with the overwhelming belief in Tallahassee that Norvell is on his way out, the donor base seemed to keep its powder dry this offseason, leading to the bargain bin QB pursuit of Ashton Daniels.
Game odds refresh periodically and are subject to change
A six-win season wouldn’t save Norvel’s job, and Thompson, who is also being pursued by Georgia and Alabama, has to know that. If he’s willing to reveal that concern in a post-official visit interview, it’s looming large enough in his decision-making that it’s difficult to consider Florida State one of the favorites here.
Thompson has already taken official visits to Georgia, Alabama, and Wake Forest. His trip to Tallahassee was the last of his OV season, so a decision could be coming soon.
