FSU football remained in the No. 4 spot in the latest CFP rankings released Tuesday night. There has been some growing sentiment the No. 5 Washington Huskies could leap the Noles into the No. 4 spot over the past couple of weeks.

It wouldn’t matter had that happened because an undefeated FSU would make the College Football Playoffs. However, the narrative some folks try to push against FSU continues to lack merit, as it has all season.

Both teams are undefeated at 10-0 and have big wins that happened at different points in the season. I will look at both teams in depth and explain why the committee got it right to keep the Huskies at No. 5 behind the Noles.

First, let’s go to the advanced metrics that account for garbage time and are opponent-adjusted. F+ ratings combine FEI and SP+ to measure teams in all three phases(offense, defense, and special teams). Here is where both teams rank:

FSU

  • Offense-No. 12
  • Defense-No. 12
  • Special Teams-No. 15

Washington

  • Offense-No. 3
    Defense-No. 42
    Special Teams-No. 29

FSU has a clear edge in two categories, and their defensive performance against the No. 1 offense (LSU) by these same metrics provides an indication they would fare well against this Washington offense. FSU hasn’t allowed more than 24 points all season.
