FSU football is among the top programs in college football entering the 2023 season. They check in at No. 8 in the AP Preseason and Coaches Poll.

Those polls consist of national writers and coaches from across the country.

The latest poll from ESPN is their Power Poll, which consists of 57 college football experts at ESPN. I italicized that expert part for a reason because we have all seen some ridiculous stuff spewed from some of the folks at ESPN.

Nevertheless, FSU football finds itself at No. 7 in their latest power rankings:

  1. Georgia (50 first-place votes)
  2. Michigan (2 first-place votes)
  3. Ohio State (2 first-place votes)
  4. Alabama (2 first-place votes)
  5. LSU
  6. USC (1 first-place vote)
  7. FSU
  8. Penn State
  9. Clemson
  10. Texas

The entire top-25 list is here.

I continue to be baffled why USC is so high in these polls. Notice how they received one first-place vote, which is why I italicized the expert part.

USC is the one school inside most top-10 polls that I’d pick to lose the most games. They don’t play defense whatsoever.

Lincoln Riley teams never do, so until that changes, I can’t support them that high, and they play a tough schedule on the backend. I’m curious why so many folks think FSU will lose to LSU and Clemson in the first four weeks, yet folks rank Clemson behind FSU in nearly every poll.

I know FSU hasn’t beaten Clemson since 2014, but past years don’t affect this year. FSU has the edge in several areas in that game, and I could say the same for the LSU game. Which, is why I don’t mind where FSU ranks in the preseason.

They will have their chance to prove their mettle in the first four weeks. It’s just good to see the Noles back in the conversation among the top programs nationally for the first time since 2017.
