Secondary

The defensive secondary is a unit I’m going into the fall with a close eye on. They have some stability in Renardo Green and Akeem Dent at cornerback and safety. Shyheim Brown has experience, but this will be his first year as a full-time starter.

FSU went to the portal and got the best cornerback available in second team All-ACC Fentrell Cypress. It took Cypress some time in the spring to get acclimated to the defense, but I expect him to be fine after fall camp. Jarrian Jones, AZ Thomas, Edwin Joseph, and Quindarrius Jones could provide snaps at cornerback. Greedy Vance has the nickel position on lock.

The biggest questions revolve around depth at the safety position. There’s little to no experience behind Dent and Brown, but FSU brought in a slew of talented players.

Freshmen KJ Kirkland and Conrad Hussey were players named by Coach Norvell at Wednesday’s press conference. JUCO player Ashlynd Barker is another player mentioned who could see early playing time.

Former nickel Kevin Knowles has moved to safety, and Coach Norvell is excited to see what he can do there. I’ll be interested to see how these battles evolve as camps progresses.
