Special Teams Potential To Improve over 2022

The punting was pretty good last year, despite what some folks want to believe. Alex Mastromanno didn’t have to punt often, but did a great job pinning opponents deep in their territory.

Mycah Pittman was an upgrade at punt returner and is no longer with the program. Who will step up to fill that role? Could Destyn Hill fill that role? Punt return defense wasn’t bad, but kickoff returns wasn’t good aside from Trey Benson’s TD return against Boston College, with only 19.76 yards per return on average.

Can Winston Wright or others help here? Kickoff return defense cost FSU in a couple of games last year. Field goal kicking was an adventure and likely cost FSU at least one win.

However, Ryan Fitzgerald showed some moxie and progressed as the year went on, which is not common when as kicker was as bad as he was.

That position is still a question mark. It feels like special teams overall is a question mark, aside from punting.

If FSU can find consistency at field goal kicking, I think everything else will work itself out.
