Ryan Fitzgerald

I know you likely didn’t see this guy on many top offensive player lists from other sites. However, Ryan Fitzgerald’s play last season likely impacted how or why FSU lost at least two of their games.

Fitzgerald only made 12 of 20 attempts, with many misses well within 50-yards. He missed two field goals against Wake Forest, and FSU’s playcalling against NC State was largely affected by his ineffectiveness as a kicker.

The same holds true against Clemson, when FSU elected to go for it on fourth down instead of attempting a field goal on at least one possession. FSU’s offense should be good enough in 2023 that they won’t have to rely on long field goals often, and I believe they’ll be better in the red zone too.

However, Ryan Fitzgerald must give Mike Norvell enough confidence in him to call the offense the way he wants instead of worrying about if he can make a 37-yard field goal.

This issue will likely only be a factor in a couple of games this season, but it could be the difference in making the College Football Playoff and not.
