FSU football has been in the mix with several high-profile defensive backs in the 2024 recruiting cycle. Patrick Surtain has yet to land one, and there were so many defensive back targets it was hard to grasp what the coaching staff wanted to do at the position.

One common factor was most of the targets had excellent size and length, with most at or above 6’0″ with long arms. Obviously, they all could run and had good ball skills.

I don’t think there was much question regarding Surtain’s ability to coach, since his son was a recent NFL First-Round Draft pick.

It was how fast could he learn the recruiting side of things. He was familiar with it, going through it with his son and as a head coach in South Florida.

However, going through a recruiting cycle as a coach at a major program like FSU is a different animal.

FSU has had many targets on campus since Surtain got hired in early 2024, and it looks like the defensive backs recruiting board is finally beginning to gain some clarity.

Let’s take a look at some key names.
