FSU football: Four-star linebacker target officially visiting FSU today
FSU football has one linebacker prospect committed to their 2024 class in three-star Jayden Parrish from Atlantic High School in Delray Beach, Florida.
Dilemma at the linebacker position
However, the Seminoles face a dilemma at the position given that redshirt seniors Kalen DeLoach and Tatum Bethune will exceed their eligibility after the 2023 season.
Linebacker recruiting has always been a topic of discussion for fans, given that the Seminoles have had some tremendous players at the position in the past, such as Derrick Brooks, Marvin Jones, Sam Cowart, and Paul McGowan, among others.
Nice haul in 2023
Linebackers coach Randy Shannon acquired three prospects in the 2023 recruiting cycle to counteract the loss with four-star Blake Nichelson, three-star DeMarco Ward, and three-star Dylan Brown-Turner.
Outlook for 2024
It leaves six scholarship linebackers on the roster for 2024, which includes DJ Lundy, Omar Graham Jr., Blake Nichelson, DeMarco Ward, Dylan Brown-Turner, and Jayden Parrish (if he does indeed sign with the Seminoles).
Unfortunately, DJ Lundy is the only linebacker with meaningful snaps at the collegiate level. Can coach Shannon acquire more talent in the room by that timeframe?
Official visitor
Luckily for FSU, Class of 2024 four-star linebacker target Michael Boganowski from Junction City, Kansas, has an official visit scheduled for today (6/19/2023) with Florida State.
The talented linebacker has already officially visited Stanford (June 2-4), Kansas (June 9-11), and Oklahoma (June 16-18). He has another official visit scheduled with Kansas State for June 23-25.
Linebacker target board
Unfortunately, the linebacker target board has not been kind to the Seminoles so far as four-star Payton Pierce (Ohio State commit), four-star Chris Cole, four-star Edwin Spillman, three-star Zavier Hamilton (South Florida commit), three-star Jeremiah Marcelin, and unranked Zach Smith are prospects that are trending elsewhere.
Analysis
The Seminoles need to acquire one linebacker prospect this recruiting cycle. Then they need to explore the transfer portal for experienced options. While the FSU defense typically only utilizes two linebackers in their defensive scheme, there still has to be viable depth at the position.
