No. 5 FSU softball (39-8, 16-2 ACC) obliterated No. 22 Virginia Tech 16-7 to sweep the series Saturday afternoon.
It was the most runs they’ve scored all season and the most scored since scoring 13 against Colgate in early March.
The Noles applied pressure in the first inning, scoring three runs on two hits. They scored four runs on five hits in the top of the second and five runs on two hits and two errors in the top of the third.
It looked as if the game was going to be over without question after five innings. However, Virginia Tech scored six runs in the bottom of the third behind four hits and two FSU errors to trim the lead to 12-6.

FSU should have gotten out of the inning without allowing any runs. Virginia Tech’s momentum would be short-lived as the FSU offense explosion continued by scoring four runs in the top of the fourth for a 16-6 lead.
Kathryn Sandercock came into the game in the bottom of the fourth and finished the final two innings, allowing only one run on two hits.
The FSU offense had 12 hits and only left three runners on base. Devyn Flaherty, Kalei Harding, Mack Leonard, Jahni Kerr, and Michaela Edenfield had two hits each. Harding, Leonard, and Kerr had three RBI each.
Flaherty and Edenfield had two RBI each. I talked about how Flaherty, Leonard, and Edenfield had been hot as of late on social media before the game, and it’s great to see their production continue.
This series sweep was sweet also because of how Virginia Tech put it on the Noles in front of their home crowd last season.
FSU softball has been playing at a high level over the past few weeks and will be back in action against hated rival and No. 14 Florida Gators Tuesday night at 6 p.m. in Tallahassee.
