FSU football announced they signed head coach Mike Norvell to a new contract extension through the 2029 season Wednesday evening.

It was an expected move to take place sometime this offseason after Norvell led the Noles to its first 10-win season since 2016.

The program looks night and day different than when he took over in December 2019. Norvell inherited a broken program with a terrible culture with a pandemic unknowingly forming on the horizon.

However, the climb has been measurable every season, culminating in a No. 11 final ranking and second-place finish in the ACC.

Itโ€™s a team thatโ€™s been easy to root for because they play hard and never quit, plus the offense is among the best in the nation. Check out the fan reaction to the news:

Thoughts

The contract is well deserved without question, considering where the program was when he took over and what he overcame to get where it is now.

He did it in about 1.5 years when you adjust for the pandemic. The contract makes him the highest-paid coach in the state of Florida and gives FSU a manageable buyout, considering they are still paying Willie Taggartโ€™s buyout(not that they should need it).

It sends a message to the competitors that Mike Norvell isnโ€™t going anywhere anytime soon, which promotes stability to recruits and potential coaching hires.

It also gives the perception FSU has money and is willing to play big-boy football, but the latter has been evident since FSU hired Michael Alford as Athletic Director in January 2022.

FSU football is in a great spot going into the 2023 season where they have expectations of competing for an ACC Championship and making the College Football Playoffs.

I wrote a few days ago about how the FSU roster is set up for long-term success. Congrats to Coach Mike Norvell.
