FSU football received some exciting news Saturday morning when All-ACC First Team defensive end Jared Verse announced his return for the 2023 season.

It was a year to the day that he announced his commitment to play football at FSU.

His roommate, Trey Benson, sent a cryptic tweet earlier that morning at 5:23 a.m.

Some clever fans equated that to Verse returning since he wears No. 5, and it would be for the 2023 season.

I’ve long thought Verse would return for one more year for several reasons.

I went two-for-two on those two players.

Thoughts

Jared Verse only has one year against Power 5 competition, and while he was first-team all-conference, he played the majority of the year less than 100 percent due to an injury suffered in the third game against Louisville. Despite that, he amassed some impressive stats with 16.5 tackles for a loss and nine sacks.

However, there are areas of his game he can improve with another year in college. We saw some better offensive linemen handle him rather easily in a few games.

It would be another year in one of the best strength and conditioning programs and would provide him with more time to hone his skills. One difference between Verse and NFL First Round selection Jermaine Johnson was their play against the run.

Johnson was instinctual and had a knack for playing under control and knowing when to attack the quarterback or set the edge. Jared Verse will lose contain sometimes or depend on his athleticism to make plays. He should make a sizable leap in 2023 with a year of experience.

Most mock drafts had him going in the second round, so his return will allow him to improve his draft stock considerably and likely into the first round with a strong season.

FSU’s 2023 schedule shapes up nicely, and FSU will be a highly-ranked team next year. If Verse delivers how I think he will, he’ll have maximum exposure each week to see his dreams come true.
