FSU football: How much did the defense improve over 2021?
By Kelvin Hunt
Parting Thoughts
FSU didn’t field an elite defense, but they also don’t have a ton of first-round NFL Draft picks on that side of the ball.
How can anyone expect a defense to be elite without at least a handful of elite players? Not to mention the lack of depth coupled with injuries. I’m not saying Adam Fuller is an elite defensive coordinator, but I know he’s not terrible.
A terrible defensive coordinator doesn’t go from No. 103 to No. 43 to No. 34 in three years. Also, who is the elite defensive coordinator that would replace him?
A fair question is can Adam Fuller and the defensive staff improve recruiting enough to get the elite players needed to field an elite defense?
They have shown the ability to attract good talent from the transfer portal and have some nice pieces in the 2023 recruiting class.
However, the 2024 recruiting class will likely give us the answer to that question. All of the negative recruiting will not be effective and there’s proof of concept with nine wins this year.
I say until then, Adam Fuller has earned the right to keep his job and keep improving.
If Mike Norvell wants to make some staff changes at other coaching positions, especially to help improve recruiting? I wouldn’t oppose it.
The defense in 2023 will need additional help from the transfer portal because Adam Fuller loses a lot of production after this season. I touched on the transfer portal needs here. I expect a heavy dose of defensive transfer portal guys.
