FSU football will play Georgia Tech (3-3, 2-1 ACC) after their bye week this week. Nole fans will get a sneak peek at the Yellow Jackets Thursday night when they take on Virginia (2-4, 0-3 ACC).

Georgia Tech fired coach Geoff Collins after a 1-3 start and promptly won their next two games, including wins over No. 24 Pittsburgh and Duke in OT last week. That resurgence may give some FSU fans pause since the Noles host the Yellow Jackets in their next contest.

However, here’s some context on Georgia Tech. Their opponent, Virginia, is 2-4 on the season, with their two wins against Richmond and Old Dominion.

The Cavaliers are winless in ACC play, losing by 17 or more points in their last two games.

Despite that, Georgia Tech enters the game as the home team and a -3 point betting favorite. That should tell you quite a bit regarding these two teams and what oddsmakers think. If there is a concern, it would be Georgia Tech has a mobile QB, but the Noles have already faced two of the better mobile quarterbacks in the nation.

Georgia Tech ranks No. 91 offensively and No. 51 defensively according to FEI advanced metrics. Virginia ranks No. 93 offensively and No. 69 defensively. The Noles rank No. 27 offensively and No. 47 defensively, so there’s clearly a gap between the three teams.

Not to mention FSU will likely be the closest to full strength defensively since the LSU game with the return of Fabien Lovett and others that have been playing at well less than 100 percent. I’ve watched Virginia a couple of times this year, and they are as awful as the numbers suggest.

I plan to watch the game Thursday night, but if Georgia Tech performs well, there is no need to overreact. In fact, if the game is close as the betting line suggests, that should bode even more confidence going into next week’s game.

The Noles are the more talented team overall, and will have the advantage in the trenches.
