Special Teams

I’ve written and talked about this unit a ton, but I can’t stress how important it will be for this unit to show improvement in 2022.

They were a disaster last season on the punt return and kickoff returns, which likely cost the Noles a win or two.

They also have to avoid losing the hidden yardage battle by not allowing punts to hit the ground. The mental aspect of knowing when to let a punt or kickoff go into the end zone is another area that needs improvement.

Hopefully, Ryan Fitzgerald can become consistent on field goals from 45-yards or less.

Mycah Pittman was brought in to help the punt return unit, and I have confidence he’ll do that. Deuce Spann, Sam McCall, and Trey Benson seem like upgrades at kickoff return.

If the Noles can improve in these areas, that can be the difference between winning or losing close ball games. Close ball games will likely be the norm, with a few teams on the schedule.
