Explosive Plays

FSU football averaged 5.79 yards per play in 2021. That was an improvement over 5.54 in 2020. The run game was the most explosive part of the FSU offense, with 82 run plays of 10+ yards.

That tied for No. 27 nationally. A lot of those explosive run plays can be attributed to Jordan Travis. However, the passing game was almost non-existent in the explosive category, with only 94 plays of 10+ yards.

That tied for No. 101 nationally. The Noles only had 14 pass plays of 30+ yards in 2021. It’s not hard to see why there was such a lack of explosiveness in the offense. FSU wide receivers struggled to beat man-to-man coverage, and the offensive line struggled to block on obvious passing plays.

The former is one reason the FSU coaches went to the transfer portal to acquire more talent at wide receiver.

I’ve been bullish on the wide receivers going into the 2022, and now others have started to come around as that group begins to stack good days back-to-back.

A more balanced attack should make the offense more consistent and explosive in 2022.
