FSU football got back to practice Tuesday after scrimmaging for the first time on Saturday. Mike Norvell wasn’t satisfied with practice overall, and I can’t say I’m surprised that’s the case.
Mike Norvell said Saturday’s scrimmage was among the best he’s been around, so it was human nature for a program not accustomed to winning to fail to keep that standard.
I’m surprised it took this long for Mike Norvell to say a practice didn’t meet expectations. I suppose we can take it as a positive it took for spring camp to be halfway over before it happened.
I remember Jimbo Fisher used to do this like clockwork to try and get his players to respond and push to get to a higher level.
As I’ve mentioned on the podcast, Norvell is usually candid, and he wasn’t ticked off or anything. He indicated they had some good flashes and some players had a good day.
However, it was more along the lines of a coach understanding the power of consistency with this group. The ability to consistently do the little things well will make a big difference overall. It’ll likely be the difference in winning and losing several 50-50 games FSU football will have on the schedule in 2022. That could be the difference between finishing 6-6 and 8-4, and those two results would produce drastically different reactions. I’m not concerned, but I’m interested in how they will respond at the next practice opportunity.
I don’t recall any instance of Norvell not being satisfied with practice and the team not responding in a positive way. If the next time he speaks to the media, he continues to voice they didn’t reach his standard? Then I’d be surprised. Maybe Tuesday was a culmination of having a great scrimmage and relaxing, and FSU hosting its NFL Pro Day? We’ll know in a couple of days.
