FSU softball: Noles power past Crimson Tide on the road
By Kelvin Hunt
FSU softball (25-1, 5-1 ACC) came from behind to beat the Alabama Crimson Tide on the road 6-5 Wednesday night for their sixth straight win.
Alabama jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead on FSU pitcher Danielle Watson with a three-run home run in the bottom of the first inning. The Noles finally got on the board in the top of the fourth inning to trim the lead to 3-1.
Kathryn Sandercock replaced Watson and was lights out until allowing a run in the bottom of the fifth inning to push the Alabama lead to 4-1.
However, FSU catcher Michaela Edenfield tied the game with a three-run home run in the top of the sixth with two outs.
Alabama helped FSU’s cause with walks and multiple errors in the final two frames, and FSU took advantage with two more runs in the top of the seventh.
Those runs proved huge as Alabama scored a run in the bottom of the seventh and had the winning run on base when Kathyrn Sandercock got the final groundout to third base to end the inning.
Sandercock went six innings and had five strikeouts while allowing five hits and two earned runs. She only threw 67 pitches, which is incredible. FSU batters only had five hits but also had four walks. It was a fairly even game with the errors by Alabama as the difference-makers and the timely hit by Edenfield.
However, if we take away the three-run home run from Alabama in the first, they don’t do much offensively either. Edenfield had an opportunity earlier in the game with runners on base but struck out. She more than made up for it with the three-run homer to tie the game.
FSU’s defense didn’t commit any errors, and it was a heck of an effort on the road to come back to win that game. The team will be back in action this weekend against Boston College.
