FSU football didn’t have the best first day of the Early Signing Period Wednesday, but the last 12 hours have been nice rebounds.

FSU signed blue-chip legacy recruit Julian Armella late Wednesday night and added a huge addition in Wisconsin transfer offensive lineman Kayden Lyles.

Lyles announced the news out of the blue and caught FSU fans by surprise.

The reactions were full of excitement and pride for a fan base in the dumps for much of Wednesday.

Thoughts

There’s a lot to be excited about, as the offensive line has been a sore spot for years. Alex Atkins has done a solid job of slowly assembling this unit and developing them to be average at worst when everyone is healthy.

The addition of Kayden Lyles provides instant depth and value at multiple positions. The center position with Maurice Smith was an area that struggled as he tried to play through a back injury. He’s also undersized and lost the point of attack much of the time, especially later in the year.

That aspect forced many plays to be over before they got started as defensive linemen got instant penetration which threw the timing of guards pulling off and everything else.

FSU returns a lot of starting snaps and another year in the strength and conditioning program could have this unit performing as one of the better units in the ACC in 2022.

FSU will likely try to sign 1-2 more offensive linemen from the portal, and that should solidify that unit with the uncertainty of Antavious Woody’s commitment.

The addition of Lyles does not count towards the overall class ranking as a transfer, but he’s a valuable piece that instantly makes the class better. Stay tuned, FSU could have more news in the next day or so.

Welcome to Nolenation Kayden Lyles!
