FSU football: How firing of Dan Mullen impacts the Noles
By Kelvin Hunt
Recruiting
FSU football has experienced firing a head coach during the season and the ramifications of it. Florida firing Mullen probably helps them recruiting-wise in the long haul because he wasn’t great at it. However, their 2022 recruiting class will likely set them back a bit with how the Early Signing Period works.
They’ve already lost at least one commit from the class, and there’s probably more to follow. One of those commits was an FSU target in linebacker EJ Lightsey. This facet could open the door for the Noles to creep back into that recruitment. Another aspect is how many of the current players on the Florida roster decide to hit the transfer portal?
It likely depends on who Florida hires, but they haven’t shown the ability to make homerun hires since Urban Meyer quit after the 2010 season. Florida has more resources than Miami, so the Noles ascending could give them a leg up similar to how when Jimbo Fisher took after Bobby Bowden.
I know Miami is talking a good game about becoming fully committed to their football program, but I don’t believe it. Florida is the school that has the resources to compete or better FSU if they use them properly.
However, once FSU gets rolling, it always seems to have more draw regarding top players in-state than the other two programs over the past decade. Look no further than the 2022 recruiting cycle that saw FSU football beating the Gators and the Canes on the trails while coming off the worst season in FSU history.
FSU has already done a superb job forming relationships with 2023 and 2024 players in Florida and Georgia. Whoever Florida hires will have to play catchup big time.
