I want to say first and foremost, not to put too much stock into who was starting and who wasn’t. Jordan Travis began with a group that looked the most like starters.
There was a rotation, and he and McKenzie Milton alternated with the ones. I would say that there is real smoke to this being a real competition that could last into the fall. With both of those quarterbacks, the offense scored.
Outside of that Treshaun Ward, Lawrence Toafili, and Jashaun Corbin all had nice days, with Ward getting most of the touchdowns on the day. Keyshawn Helton, Ontaria Wilson, and the freshmen looked good as they fought through the wind.
Wilson probably made the play of the day on a diving catch. Helton was sure-handed and reliable and took some slant routes for a 10 yard gain. Each freshman receiver had a standout play of their own.
They both made good throws, but there weren’t a lot of wide receivers chunk plays. Most of the throws were quick routes and underneath the defense. The offensive line started poorly but then came into its own as the day went on,and there was a definite improvement.
Their starting group was the same as last seasons, without Baveon Johnson or Devontae Love-Taylor. Love-Taylor is still rehabbing his knee injury, while Baveon was replaced by Brady Scott for reasons unknown right now.
No matter who is on the line, Jermaine Johnson will eat their lunch. He recorded a sack, some TFLs, and pretty routinely got penetration into the backfield. Derrick McClendon played many snaps and got himself a sack and some impact plays as well
Fabian Lovett and Quashon Fuller also played well. Each getting tackles for loss and penetrating the backfield.
The secondary was good in coverage but needs to work on defending the run and tackling. Jarrian Jones made some plays and forced a fumble. Maybe his injuries were more than we thought last season?
Jarvis Brownlee had a good day, holding Keyshawn Helton to a small bit of production. Jammie Robinson and Brandon Moore are big hitters and show some thump at least once a day.
Travis Jay and Brendan Gant also started at safety while Robinson played nickel corner.
