FSU football: Thoughts on Chubba Purdy rehabbing remainder of spring
By Kelvin Hunt
FSU football head coach Mike Norvell spoke with media after practice Thursday evening and dropped a few nuggets of information.
It sounded like the practice went well with a lot of physicality, which Norvell has preached since arriving in Tallahassee.
He also highlighted the competition on special teams taking place and offensive lineman Thomas Shrader went down with an injury at practice that will require further evaluation.
One of the main things he spoke about was the decision for Chubba Purdy to focus on rehabbing the remainder of spring camp:
"“With Chubba, we made a decision as he has been going through his rehabilitation process coming off the fall. He’s had a really good first four practices,” said Norvell. “We’re gonna focus the rest of this spring with him just on his rehab process. Getting back to 100 percent as we get going into the summer program.”"
You’ll recall Purdy suffered a broken collarbone last fall but emerged to earn playing time before having a complication to the injury sideline him again.
The quarterback competition is technically a four-way battle between McKenzie Milton, Jordan Travis, Chubba Purdy, and Tate Rodemaker.
That’s probably the order if I had to list them right now, although Jordan Travis isn’t going to give up that starting position without a fight.
The significance of Purdy focusing on rehabbing the remainder of the spring camp means more reps for the other three quarterbacks.
Both Milton and Travis need as many reps as possible, and they should get them since they will not be tackled in spring camp.
Norvell and Milton have commented he’s fine physically, but it’s getting comfortable with the playbook that’s his biggest focus.
The same bodes for Travis, who ran a paired down offense last season with him missing a lot of camp with injuries himself.
I don’t think anyone expects Tate Rodemaker to vie for the starting job, but this news will at least give him an opportunity for more reps as well. The Noles will participate in multiple scrimmages before spring camp concludes, so these will be great opportunities for all three quarterbacks to get more experience in real game situations.
Here’s to hoping Purdy can get to 100 percent in time for the summer program.
