FSU football: Projected offensive skill depth chart for spring 2021
By Cole Maines
QB: McKenzie Milton, Jordan Travis, Chubba Purdy, Tate Rodemaker
This one is easy. You don’t bring in McKenzie Milton for him to not play. The biggest problem is how do you balance shifting to Milton while one of the best athletes on your team sits on the bench?
I think that you have to use Travis in any way that you can. I have been a big proponent of moving him into a gadget type role, similar to how Ja’khi Douglas was but with more of a quarterback focus because of his abilities there.
Imagine a pitch to the outside to Travis, who can now throw it or run it for a touchdown. It would be like watching kids come up with trick plays in a back yard or watching a seven-on-seven tournament with all of these possible trick plays.
There is the possibility Travis lines up under center frequently, especially since the offensive line is a massive question mark and Milton is still coming off of his gruesome injury, so protecting him is paramount.
I still think Purdy is the quarterback of the future and has the most to learn from Milton on and off the field. Travis has to get better in the passing game, particularly the intermediate routes while finding ways to improve his durability.
Rodemaker has a ton to learn and will fill the same role Sean Maguire had when Jameis Winston was the clear starter. However, he’s still an important piece because all three of the other players have histories of injuries.
