FSU football: 5 defensive players from 2020 class poised for breakout
By Cole Maines
I know some of these players are not from the 2020 recruiting class, but they are still young with a decent upside.
Jarvis Brownlee- Brownlee proved he is a dog in 2020 and will factor into the rotation if he doesn’t nap a starting spot. He shined at the Nickel corner position last year and could see more time in 2021.
Sydney Williams- I’m not sure anyone expected Sydney Williams to see the field in 2020, but he finished 12th on the team in total tackles. Could he factor more into the rotation at safety in 2021?
Derrick McClendon-McClendon flashed a couple of times last year, including a huge sack in the win over North Carolina. The jury is still out on him, but he could surprise some people this fall with a full offseason to get stronger and develop.
Most of the impactful young players were concentrated on the defensive side of the ball which contextualizes some of their struggles.
It is still relatively inexplicable how the veterans had such an astounding drop off in the quality of play, but if they had played well, would we know that this young talent was here.
We are going to continue the climb. After all, it can’t get any worse.
