FSU football is in a position where they need to show improvement in their next game. Here’s why this bye week should be different than the first one.

FSU football is at the halfway point and in their second bye week of the season following their blowout loss against Louisville last week.

We wrote how the first bye week was a gift and a curse, but this bye week comes at a perfect time. A lot of players are looking to heal from injuries, namely quarterback Jordan Travis, and some units continue to need a ton of practice reps to get better.

The Noles come out of their first bye week and proceeded to get their doors blown off by rival Miami. Most thought having a week to prepare for the Canes would have been a good thing.

However, at the point, the team was just a few weeks removed from fall camp without much of spring practice. I suppose I was hasty in my want for this team to show massive improvements at the time. Although, I do still have a problem with the effort shown in most of that game from several players.

The latter seems to have been corrected for the most part, with the biggest issue being on the defensive side of the ball. The defense seems OK until a couple of things don’t go their way, and they proceed to fold like a wet t-shirt.

Coach Norvell

spoke on it in his Tuesday press conference:

Why This Bye Week Should Be Different

The Noles have played six games and will have had nearly three months of practice when they take on Pittsburgh on November 7. I understand the players didn’t have a spring and had to learn new schemes, etc.

However, the offense has seen major improvements with Jordan Travis as the quarterback. The offense is still limited, but it’s not an absolute disaster as long as Travis is healthy.

The defense returns almost every player from last year, and it’s been the worst FSU defense in history through six games.

After this bye week and week to prepare for Pittsburgh, we should be able to see improvement in these defensive players. If not, I’m not sure what else can be done. The more games and practices they have, the less the lack of spring ball can be an excuse for their inability to play together as a unit.

Mike Norvell believes they are doing all they can as a coaching staff, but ultimately, it’s up to the players to have the right mentality when adversity appears during a game.

If they go into the Pittsburgh game and get gashed on defense? I’m not sure we can blame the coaches at that point.
