Special Teams

One of the hallmarks of Mike Norvell coached team is great special team play. As I mentioned, we’ve seen better special teams this season than year’s past.

Alex Mastramanno has been solid as a freshman, averaging 43.60 yards per punt, and opposing teams are averaging just five yards per return.

FSU kickoff coverage is allowing teams 18 yards per return, with FSU averaging just over 25 yards per return.

The Noles had a big day on special teams, aside from the missed field goal and missed extra point by freshman Ryan Fitzgerald. Granted, the missed field goal was from 49 yards and the far left hash mark. He had the leg strength, but he just pushed it to the right a bit.

Keyshawn Helton shined in the return game aside from a dumb decision to field a punt inside the 10-yard line. That decision gave the offense poor field position that ultimately led to the pick-six interception.

He had to kickoff returns of 30 yards plus that gave the Nole offense great field position to start their drives.
