FSU football: Impact of NCAA extending recruiting dead period to June 30
By Kelvin Hunt
FSU football needs to get players on campus to help bolster its recruiting presence. That’s not going to happen for at least another month or two.
FSU football (and everyone else) will need to continue its virtual approach recruiting for the foreseeable future.
The NCAA has decided to extend its recruiting dead period through June 30. It’s not unexpected as FSU has canceled on-campus activities through the beginning of August.
However, recently there was a glimmer of hope things could be expedited as the Governor of Florida is in favor of re-opening the state.
Had the dead period not been extended, FSU coaches could have at least started going to visit recruits.
It’s not ideal for a brand new coaching staff, but at least everyone is having to play by the same rules. The Noles landed their sixth commitment in the 2021 recruiting class Tuesday, and having the ability to see recruits in person would have been a game-changer.
There’s a possibility this dead period could be extended again depending on how things look across the nation regarding the coronavirus.
If the number of cases declines nationally, the dead period could be lifted. However, one thing to remember is the NCAA has to take into account all of the states to keep a level playing field.
Just because the state of Florida may be opening up, that doesn’t mean other states are following the same timeline.
One thing the extension could do is put pressure on the NCAA later concerning the early signing period. Mike Norvell is in favor of not having an early signing period as recruits have not and potentially may not be able to take all of their visits before December.
The NCAA taking away the early signing period would give FSU football additional time to recruit targets that would have signed early.
