Former FSU standout QB Jameis Winston may not get a starting job in the NFL in 2020. Here are three reasons why he should be a starter.

Jameis Winston will always hold a special place in the heart of FSU football fans. His two seasons in the garnet and gold made for two of the most riveting seasons in Tallahassee.

Winston went 26-1 as a starter and helped the Noles win its third national title and  back-to-back ACC Conference championships.

A Heisman Trophy winner and the highest NFL Draft pick FSU football has ever produced. So yes, I’d be a bit biased in my feelings toward Jameis Winston as a player, but I’m not blinded by sheer homerism.

I understand Winston has some baggage with him that people still like to hold over his head from his time in Tallahassee.

There has been at least one instance of him using questionable judgment off the field during his time in Tampa Bay.

However, all in all, Winston is a guy that genuinely likes helping people and has done a ton of charity work for people in the Tampa Bay area.

His time in Tampa Bay is over, and I’m still not sure people realize how much he lifted that organization that continued to fail him during his five-year tenure.

It looks as though he’ll have trouble finding a starting job in the NFL next season which I find hilarious and sad at the same time. There are no legitimate reasons why he can’t start for at least five NFL teams next season in my estimate.

Here are three reasons why Winston should be a starter in 2020.

People Forgot How Bad Tampa Bay Was Before Jameis Winston

For all the grief people want to give Jameis Winston, I think they have forgotten how bad Tampa Bay was before his arrival in 2015.

Here’s where they were offensive the two seasons before him:

  • 18 ppg, 5.13 ypp (2013)
  • 17.3 ppg, 5.65 ypp (2014)

The 2019 reason season saw the Tampa Bay Buccaneers average 28.6 ppg(No. 4 in NFL) and 6.39 ypp.

Did Jameis Winston lead the lead in interceptions thrown? Absolutely, but he was also No. 2 in the league with 33 touchdowns thrown.

It should be mentioned he played with an injured thumb, practically blind, and had to have surgery on a torn meniscus in the off-season. Can we talk about how he’s had basically no running game or anyone else to throw to besides Mike Evans and Chris Godwin?

The problem wasn’t the offense, it was the defense that allowed 28.1 ppg (fourth-worst in the NFL).

He’s A Great Leader

Jameis Winston came into the Tampa Bay Buccaneer organization and immediately became the leader of the team.

He was the first one at the practice facility most of the time, always encouraged his teammates, played hurt, and never placed blame on anyone for their failures as an organization.

This tweet below describes the respect his teammates had for him.

Tampa Bay Buccaneer players didn’t post their thoughts on social media about Tom Brady signing with the organization out of respect for Jameis Winston.

Brady is arguably the greatest NFL QB of all-time, with six Super Bowl rings with the latest coming in the 2018 season. It’s not like he’s some over the hill veteran QB that’s been floundering around on mediocre teams coming in.

However, it is ironic Brady and Winston had the same QB rating in 2019.

One player is 26 years old and the other one will be 43 years old when the season starts later this year.

There are not 10 QB’s better than him in the NFL

The notion Winston will not be a starter in 2020 is beyond ludicrous. So, NFL general managers who most of them are terrible anyways are willing to let their pride get in the way of making their team better by signing a QB like Jameis Winston?

It’s no surprise the teams usually with the worst records and NFL Draft history remain the same.

How long have the Miami Dolphins been terrible? What about teams like Washington, Detroit, Cleveland, and Cincinnati?

I understand salary caps and things can limit the number of teams Winston can play for. He shouldn’t be expected to accept a backup quarterback’s salary either.

However, at his age and experience, it’s preposterous teams would rather take a chance on players like Andy Dalton, Baker Mayfield, Dwayne Haskins, and Case Keenum.

As an FSU fan that’s watched Winston play for a terrible organization like the Buccaneers, I almost feel bad for suggesting he go start for another terrible organization.

He probably would be better off as a backup QB in Pittsburgh, as some have suggested. However, I’m simply stating why Winston should be a starter in the NFL in 2020.
