FSU football: Superlatives for 2020 recruiting class
By Kelvin Hunt
FSU football brought in a solid recruiting class after firing its coach during the season. We take a look at the superlatives for 2020 recruiting.
FSU football had the opportunity to get over the hump with its 2020 recruiting class had the season gone better on the field.
The class hovered around top 15 for much of the recruiting cycle but failed to catch any real momentum once blowout losses to Clemson and Miami took place.
The firing of Willie Taggart after the Miami loss put recruiting in limbo although Odell Haggins and the coaches on staff did a great job of keeping things stabilized until Mike Norvell was hired in early December.
However, that meant FSU football was going to have its second transitional recruiting class in the last three years.
Norvell and staff did about as good as one could hope with all things considered and addressed a lot of needs on the roster.
Here’s a run down of superlatives for the 2020 class:
Biggest Surprise-Chubba Purdy
There were questions surrounding Mike Norvell’s recruiting prowess when he took the FSU job. Well, let’s say some of those doubts were put to rest when he flipped four-star quarterback Chubba Purdy from Louisville in less than 10 days on the job.
It was like Keith Sweat because “Nobody” saw that one coming. Purdy was never on the radar of the former staff and had never been to Tallahassee prior to visiting the last weekend prior to the early signing period.
The Noles hadn’t signed a blue-chip recruit since Bailey Hockman in the 2017 recruiting cycle. Purdy flipping and signing with the Noles was a big boost and provided some much-needed momentum to Mike Norvell and the energy of the fan base behind him.
