FSU basketball had been playing with fire the last few games of its winning streak. Their poor play came back to bite them against Virginia.

No. 5 FSU basketball (17-3, 7-2 ACC) went into Virginia (14-6, 6-4 ACC) as underdogs and the oddsmakers were proved correct with a 61-56 loss.

The Noles saw their 10 game winning streak end and there’s a good chance their hopes of winning the ACC outright went up in smoke with the loss.

It was just poor offensive execution by the Noles, something we’ve come to get familiar with over the last few games. A combination of poor shot selection and getting beat on the boards.

Virginia shot 23 free throws compared to just 11 for FSU basketball. The Cavaliers converted 20 of those free throws and FSU converted just seven of theirs.

Thoughts

I didn’t expect the Noles to win this game as Virginia is a style matchup nightmare. The Noles were lucky to win the first contest between the too.

The difference in the amount of free throws comes down to not attacking the basket and shooting too many jump shots.

It’s like the opponents always go to the free throw line more than FSU because of that. The good news is that is something the Noles CAN address if they choose to do so.

This loss could be a good wakeup call for this team. It’s like they got used to playing ugly and still coming out with a win during the 10 game winning streak.

They need to get back to guarding on defense too as they allowed way too many layups which has become the norm the last few games.
