No. 9 FSU basketball didn’t play its best basketball game, but found a way to take down defending national champion Virginia.

FSU basketball (15-2, 5-1 ACC) won its eighth consecutive game with its 54-50 win over Virginia (11-5, 3-3 ACC) Wednesday night.

The Noles are now tied atop the ACC conference with Duke and Louisville with a previous win over Louisville.

FSU overcame a myriad of issues in the win. They had terrible shot selection much of the game, turned the ball over too many times and gave up way too many layups on defense.

They also missed at least 10 shots within five feet of the basket. Nevertheless, the Noles found a way to win by winning the offensive boards battle and forcing 18 turnovers on defense.

Devin Vassell and Anthony Polite were huge with 18 and 14 points respectively. Polite was 4-4 from beyond the arc.

It was a game that looked like it could slip away from the Noles late, but a 10-3 run in the last three minutes of the game sealed the win and FSU fans rejoiced.

Thoughts

It’s a big win for the Noles that won’t much too much to the national media with UVA coming into the game on a two game losing streak.

However, their style of basketball makes them a tough out against anyone and finding a way to win while only shooting 37 percent shows this team can win games in a variety of ways.

In hindsight, it’s a game they should have won by double digits as they left a lot of points on the floor with missed layups and poor effort at times on defense.

The Noles will travel Saturday to take on rival Miami with a 12 p.m. ET tip with the game airing on the ACC Network.
