FSU football got news today that former three-star tight end Tre McKitty would be leaving the Noles and entering the transfer portal.

FSU football will be thin at the tight end position in 2020 as Tre McKitty announced he will be heading to the transfer portal as a graduate transfer.

That means he will be eligible to play immediately at wherever his next destination will be.

He was part of the last Jimbo Fisher class in 2017 and was thought to be a major get despite only being rated as a three-star recruit.

McKitty made the announcement via his Twitter account Thursday afternoon to the surprise of some fans.

This makes the news of 2020 three-star tight end Carter Boatwright enrolling early this spring even more important. It also opens the door for former four-star tight end Camren McDonald to see the field much more in 2020.

Thoughts

It’s clear the fans respect what McKitty did as a student athlete.  McKitty is a smart young man who will be graduating with a degree while also working to obtain his pilot’s license. He’ll do well in whatever he decided to do, but it’s obvious he doesn’t feel he lived up to his potential in Tallahassee although he showed flashes at times.

He had his most productive year as a sophomore and finished his FSU football career with 50 receptions for 520 yards with two touchdowns.

I really thought McKitty would be much more of a weapon in the Kendal Briles’ offense. What’s puzzling is tight ends are used quite a bit in Mike Norvell’s offense so it comes a bit of a surprise that he would want to leave with one year remaining.

The former three-star recruit from Florida had offers from the likes of Miami, Auburn, Florida, Georgia and LSU among others. I wouldn’t be surprised to see him stay in-state to finish out his last year of eligibility.
