FSU Football: Why Odell Haggins should be considered for head coach hire
By Jason Parker
FSU football is still busy looking for the next man to lead the program – but could the man with the best chance to lead them already be doing that?
In the past two weeks, the world around the FSU football program has done a complete 180 degree turn – as a Seminoles team who was once wondering if another losing season was coming there way is at least breathing a sigh of relief in the fact that a win this weekend means the Seminoles will be back in a bowl game after this regular season.
It’s the second time in the last three seasons where it has taken a late season win to get the Noles to that point – and both times, it has happened when maybe one of the biggest legends of the program has led the team on an interim basis.
Call him “3 and O-dell” at this point, but Odell Haggins has taken the love he has for the FSU football program as a former All-American player and longtime assistant coach to lead the Seminoles to a bowl game in 2017 and possibly in 2019 – something that needs to be talked about for a big reason.

More than likely in the coming weeks, the Seminoles are going to have a new full time head coach. Reports are all over the place ranging from former Oklahoma head coach and national title winner Bob Stoops to everyone from current coaches like his brother, Kentucky head coach Mark Stoops, and more.
But, unlike after the 2017 season when Haggins made it clear he did not want to be the head coach on a full time basis, it has reportedly been made clear this time that he wouldn’t mind being named the full time head coach of the Noles.
It may seem far fetched in the eyes of some, especially those big money boosters who are trying to bring in a big name from the past – but is it really that bad of an idea?
There is no one who is going to love the Seminoles and will work harder for the FSU football program – and while the same thing could have been said about Deion Sanders during the silly rumors that he would be considered, Haggins has over a quarter century on the coaching staff of three different head coaches.
Many of the current players took the social media this past week in support of the move – something that gains more traction when you look at the fact that he has not lost any of the three games he has been the head coach for (granted, they were against Louisiana Monroe, Southern Miss and Boston College).
In the end, Haggins likely is not going to be the next full time head coach of the Seminoles – whether he’s a grad of the school or not, there is a lot against him judging from the way boosters are thinking. That fact alone is truly a shame because of what he could bring to the program just even by being taken seriously in saying he wants to be considered.
