FSU football is at a pivotal moment for a historically great program without a lot of coaching turnover. Why they must make a splash hire to right the ship.

FSU football is a mess right now. The perception of the program is worse now than it was when Jimbo Fisher left.

There will be less elite talent on the roster with Cam Akers, Marvin Wilson and potentially a couple of other former blue chip recruits leaving after this season.

They still don’t have a QB and the offensive line will still be terrible to say the least. Opposing coaches know this information and it’s a reason why it was going to be extremely difficult for Willie Taggart to ever turn things around as the results on the field were hard to come by in his tenure.

I don’t think it’ll happen but if FSU brass went out and hired a Dave Clawson type coach I don’t think the turnaround would be as quick as FSU football fans would want.

I’m just using him as an example, but Clawson is an excellent coach and has done a great job at Wake Forest. However, he’s not the type of coach that would get the fan base excited nor those recruits that used to be committed to the program.

To get those recruits back and the fan base back on board with FSU trying to play big boy football again? The FSU administration needs to make a splash hire. There’s some smoke around former Oklahoma head coach Bob Stoops as FSU Athletic Director David Coburn has confirmed he is indeed a target.

Stoops has won a national title and competed for several others while only being removed from the college scene for just two years.

Have you paid attention to what an older Mack Brown (68 yrs old) has done at North Carolina this year? Brown coached previously at UNC and had been out of the game for a long time, but has turned that program around in less than a year with less talent than what FSU has on its roster.

A splash hire takes away the ammunition to continuously negative recruit with the potential to land the elite players needed to right the ship. It re-energizes the fan base a hopefully would mean FSU was “all-in” like some other programs.

Now, it’s not going to happen in 2020, but it’s just as we said with Willie Taggart this season. There has to be progress shown on the field.

A proven coach/splash hire should be able to make that happen and then it’s off to the races once again.
