FSU Football: Firing Willie Taggart was right move, but was it the right time?

FSU football did the only thing that was going to take place after the loss to Miami, but did it need to take place with three games left to play?

As the news broke Sunday afternoon that FSU football would be moving on from head coach Willie Taggart after just 21 games, the news came as a shock to many fans of the Noles – mostly, for me at least, about the reports that boosters were able to raise $20 million reportedly for the buyout after fans grew upset with each and every loss.

As the day went on, the questions turned to what the future would hold for the Seminoles and who was going to be the next head coach. But even more so should be the following question: was it the right move at the moment with three games left in the regular season?

It was a move that was more than likely going to take place after the 27-10 loss to rival Miami – not so much because FSU football lost the game, but because they looked more like the 2018 team that didn’t even show up at times as opposed to the three games they lost this season by a combined 14 points.

The argument against making this move is as follows: what happens if, and you need to follow me on this one, the Seminoles somehow win their final three regular season games as well as the bowl game to finish with an 8-5 record that is three games better than what took place last year.

It could happen – it likely won’t judging by what took place this past weekend, but you have to wonder if the school cut bait too soon. I was all set to say that if the Seminoles had a losing record for a second straight season that Taggart should be fired, but one has to wonder if making this move with three games left was too soon.

Ultimately, this one was about doing it while you have a chance to evaluate and make as close to a home run hire as possible while also saving the recruiting class for 2020 for FSU football before those who committed to the Noles because of Taggart have a chance to bail.

For all of the reason ranging from the outcries from critics to bad losses to teams they had no business losing bad to like the Canes, it was going to take place – hopefully, the firing of Willie Taggart didn’t come too soon.
