FSU football: How much blame can be placed on Willie Taggart?

Staff Hirings

The original staff hired by Willie Taggart changed after one year and he has to be given credit for that. He had to assemble that original staff fairly quickly with the new early signing period for recruiting and wasn’t able to hire who he wanted.

That’s what you get when you have to settle for plans B and C or D.

There was no surprise changes were made after the 2018. He made assessments and concluded the offense and special teams needed miraculous improvements and made the necessary changes with at offensive coordinator, offensive line and special teams.

He went out and hired Kendal Briles, Randy Clements and Ron Dugans. Those additions have improved the offense significantly compared to 2018.

Special teams have improved tremendously over 2018 as well aside from Ricky Aguayo being inconsistent. The biggest issue for 2019 has been the defense which has not played anywhere close to the talent level on the roster.

A competent defense probably has FSU at 6-1 right now and everything else is a non-issue because the program would be winning.

Harlon Barnett has been a disaster as a defensive coordinator(and was not Willie Taggart’s first choice).

Taggart has to be given credit for bringing on Jim Leavitt as a defensive analyst after the Louisiana-Monroe game. Leavitt was Taggart’s first choice to be hired at defensive coordinator and was his former defensive coordinator at Oregon.

Had that not happened, I’m convinced FSU is probably 1-6 instead of 3-4 right now.
