FSU Football smart to eliminate ‘turnover bag’ for 2019 season

FSU football is going to be going with no gimmicks (so far) during the upcoming season – a smart move considering what took place during the 2018 season.

In the first season under head coach Willie Taggart last year, the FSU football team unveiled an inspirational item for those on the defense when they came up with a turnover – a nearly $500 red backpack that was worn by the player who got the turnover and subsequently mocked by everyone across Tallahassee and around the country.

It seems that the idea of ‘securing the bag’, the reason given for a backpack was being worn on the sideline never caught on – mostly because it seemed like something that was desperately thought of to compete with what other schools are doing, like that annoying turnover chain that those down in Coral Gables have each season.

For the 2019 season, Taggart and the FSU football team have unveiled what they are going to be use to get the defense hyped up o get turnovers: absolutely nothing.

During an interview on CBS Sports HQ, Taggart was asked by former Seminoles quarterback Danny Kanell – who took shots at the backpack while asking the question – if it was making a comeback before Taggart shut that down.

Now, the critics are going to hate the fact that there is one less thing they can make fun of FSU football about – but the fact of the matter is that when you go 5-7 the year before, you would only make things worse by having gimmicks on the sideline this season.

It doesn’t matter if Taggart had said they were going to have a turnover spear, for example, that would be used this coming season – anything that the Seminoles do for at least the first half of the season is going to be met with “yeah, but FSU went 5-7 last season” until the Seminoles can prove they are back.

If FSU football does, and it’s possible, have a  5-1 record after the Clemson game on October 12th, you may see something come out because the Noles would have proven they have turned things around after what took place in 2018. But, until that is reached, it’s smart to just show their strength on the field.

Plus, for those of us who use a garnet Nike FSU backpack at work, it will give fans of Miami and Florida less of a chance to make fun of things – but that’s just the opinion of one man.
