Special Teams

The FSU football special teams were not very impressive last season which has been the case for the past few years if you’ve been paying attention.

Ricky Aguayo performed at a sup-par level as he missed six field goals with half of those coming in the first two games last season. I think those early misses shook his confidence and he’ll need to get it together now that FSU has another kicker on the roster in Ryan Fitzgerald.

The return teams struggled against other teams, allowing 25 yards per kickoff return and 11 yards per punt return.

Logan Tyler averaged 43.23 yards per punt, but often lacked the hang time needed for gunners to get downfield which allowed teams to have massive returns.

D.J. Matthews averaged 13 yards per punt, but only had 19 opportunities all season.

This was the weakest unit on the team aside from the offensive line. However, FSU coach Mark Snyder has experience with special teams and is an upgrade over former coach Alonzo Hampton.
