Proposed FSU Football game with Alabama is crazy but needed

FSU Football is reportedly negotiating a game to start the 2025 season with the Crimson Tide – something that right now looks like something insane to do.

When it comes to scheduling games over the past seasons, FSU football will put their slate against  every other team in the country – with ACC games against rival teams like Clemson and Miami along with the annual non-conference slate that includes rival Florida and games this decade against Oklahoma, Notre Dame and Alabama.

It’s that last team that struck fear into the hearts of many of us in garnet and gold after what took place in the opener of the 2017 season – a 24-7 setback that saw the Noles’ starting quarterback go down for the season to an injury and the head coach at the time bolt before the season could be completed.

So, with what took place inside Atlanta’s Mercedes Benz Stadium just two seasons ago, FSU football would be trying to stay away from doing something like that again, right? Wrong.

According to reports from both ESPN and the Tallahassee Democrat, the Seminoles are in discussions with Alabama to open the 2025 season in the same spot as part of the Crimson Tide’s continuing streak of opening their games at a neutral site location.

Now, on paper it looks like something that would be…well, insane might be the best word to describe it. After all, Alabama is coming off four straight trips to the national title game with two wins while FSU football is hoping to get back to the postseason after their first losing season in over four decades last year.

It also seems pretty unneeded since the Seminoles have plenty of non-conference competition ahead of them –  with an opener against West Virginia in 2020 along with games against Notre Dame, a series in 2027 and 2028 with Georgia and a reported series with LSU in the works for 2022 and 2023.

But, when push comes to shove, FSU football should play Alabama to open the 2025 season if for no other reason than one word: courage. The Seminoles have to show they are not afraid – and while this might come across as a suicide mission for the Noles at this point, we don’t know what the 2025 season might be like.

For all we know, Nick Saban could be out well before that season kicks off and the Crimson Tide could be in a rut while the Seminoles and head coach Willie Taggart could have won multiple national titles by that time this game would take place.

The bottom line is that FSU football can’t be afraid. Sure, they may end up being a heavy underdog and people will talk about what took place to open 2017 – but that fear can not be in the heart of those wearing garnet and gold when it comes to playing anyone at any time.

So, if our opinion means anything to the process, let us hope that the 2025 season starts with a big time showdown in the capital of Georgia.
