FSU football: Noles in prime position to surprise in 2019
By Kelvin Hunt
FSU football goes into the 2019 with a lot to prove. Fortunately, expectations are extremely low from a national perspective.
Where should FSU football be ranked coming off the worst season in four decades? It really doesn’t matter when it comes to preseason rankings.
The Top 25 Preseason Coaches Poll was released this week and of course it was heavily biased with SEC schools.
There were only two ACC schools represented(three if you want to count Notre Dame). There are all types of flaws in preseason polls.
A prime example is a lesser talented Nebraska team that finished (4-8) last season being ranked No. 26 with FSU checking in at No. 46.
The good news? It means expectations are extremely low for the Noles entering the season from a national perspective. Do you know what else?
If FSU wins their opener against Boise State and then takes out Virginia in their third game? They’ll more than likely find themselves in the top 25 again just like that.
It’s a great spot to be in when it comes to trying to change the perception of the program. I can remember when Jimbo Fisher took over in 2010, the narrative was always “can the Noles get back to the top” or something along those lines.
It seems the program is in the same space as it was back then. However, the only difference is there’s a program (Clemson) in their division that’s been operating at an elite level the past few years.
FSU doesn’t necessarily need to beat Clemson this year although obviously that’s the goal. They do need to be competitive with them after getting curb stomped at home last season.
The schedule is a bit easier than last season and FSU football has a chance to change the perception of the program relatively quickly.
If they can get to the Clemson game undefeated and either beat them or be competitive, that will go a long ways to putting the Noles right where they want to be in terms of being “back” from a national perspective.
