FSU football addressed its depth at QB via the transfer market after not landing QB for the second year. It looks like their will be competition going into fall camp once again.

FSU football head coach Willie Taggart addressed the media at Wednesday’s ACC Kickoff event and spoke on a variety of things.

One of the hottest topics is who’ll be the starting quarterback in Tallahassee for the second consecutive year.

The odds on favorite is redshirt sophomore James Blackman who’s going into his third year with the program.

He got a taste of an offense similar to what they’ll run under Kendal Briles and got a ton of reps last season while getting one start and performing well.

However, it seems the job isn’t set in concrete just yet for him according to Willie Taggart:

“It’s a competition, [Blackman] is the starting quarterback, he has been starting the spring, and he has the understanding that he will go in [to preseason camp as the] No. 1.”

The other eligible quarterback Alex Hornibrook was not on campus in the spring as he transferred in from Wisconsin.

“Blackman will go out with our starters. He was here in the spring, understands our offense,” Taggart said. “But both guys Blackman and Hornibrook will get reps with the starters. They are going to compete for the job. The best man is going to win.”

Thoughts

I mentioned Willie Taggart not sending James Blackman to the ACC Kickoff event was likely because of this situation. If he sent Blackman it would essentially signal he’s locked in as the starter.

However, keeping him in Tallahassee gives the impression the job isn’t locked down and Taggart confirmed that at the event.

I think the job is Blackman’s all the way. He’s the more talented player with more experience in the spread system and has more eligibility left.

Blackman has never shied away from competition and stayed last season when Deondre Francois was given the nod when I thought Blackman should have gotten the job.

Coach Taggart has always heaped praise regarding Blackman’s leadership and work ethic. It sounds like he wants Blackman to have a better understand of certain situations when its game time.

That’ll come with more reps and experience as the guy only has 13 starts under his belt.

Technically the competition is still open, but it’s Blackman’s job to lose and I don’t think that’s going to happen.
