FSU football was able to land a commitment from a defensive tackle in the 2020 class who is big on size, but has played the sport for just one season.

Entering Friday, there were plenty of people both inside the FSU football program and those who root for the Seminoles that had a simple question – could the Noles land their first commitment from a defensive lineman in the class for 2020 as they awaited word in the afternoon about one top recruit from the Sunshine State.

By noon, the Seminoles – namely head coach Willie Taggart and segment coach Odell Haggins – were smiling as big as they could with the news that Manny Rodgers from Jensen Beach was going to be a member of the #Tribe20 class with a verbal commitment.

Rogers is a three or four star talent from the area near Stuart along Florida’s Treasure Coast who is bringing his giant 6’5″, 300 lbs. body with him after an eight sack showing during the 2018 high school season – his first of competitive football.

Rogers went with FSU football after narrowing his finalists down to three schools, choosing the Seminoles over both the Florida Gators and the Tennessee Volunteers – impressive considering he will not be playing for an ACC team that had a losing record over two traditional SEC powers.

When talking to the local media, he gave plenty of praise to the longtime assistant coach who will be in charge of molding him in Tallahassee.

"I love the coaches there. They make me feel like I’m at home. Especially coach Odell Haggins. He’s been there for 25-plus years and I know when I get there he’s not going to leave and I’m going to have some other coach. I know he’s going to make me grow as a man and help me through life. That connection was very important for me. I don’t really trust people like that, so when I heard him talking, he had my trust. When I went to other colleges, it didn’t feel the same as when I went to Florida State.I’m ready to go. I’m ready to get to work."

Rogers, as we mentioned, becomes the first defensive tackle to commit to being a part of the #Tribe20 class – something that Taggart and the FSU football team are more than happy to check off their list.
