Duo of FSU Football defensive backs ranked among best entering 2019
By Jason Parker
FSU football was ranked as the only ACC program to have a duo of defensive backs ranked among the best at that spot entering the upcoming season.
For decades now, the FSU football team has been known for doing many things – from winning seasons to national titles – and has been known for sending plenty of top talent to the next level and being a program that sends everyone from quarterbacks to wide receivers off to the National Football League each season.
Of course, one of those spots where the Seminoles find themselves with very little competition would be at defensive back – after all, when you’re talking about a position that has had guys like Deion Sanders, Terrell Buckley, LeRoy Butler, Jalen Ramsey, Derwin James and so many others, there aren’t many schools that can match that.
While the FSU football team doesn’t have a winning season streak to worry about after 2018, they still are among the tops in the tops in the country when it comes to the secondary positions – and arguably could have the best unit in the ACC this coming season thanks to preseason rankings.
Florida State Seminoles Football
College Football News seems to be one of those as they ranked two Seminoles – Stanford Samuels III and Asante Samuel Jr. – among their list of the top 30 defensive backs in the country entering the 2019 season with FSU football being the only ACC school to have multiple players on the list.
"No. 5. Stanford Samuels, Jr. Florida StateYet another very big, very talented Florida State defensive back who’ll soon be a star at the next level…with two picks and five broken up passes as a freshman, and followed it up with a fantastic 58-tackle, four interception season. With Samuels working along with Asante Samuel, FSU lis loaded at corner.No. 21. Asante Samuel, Soph. Florida StateThe son of the former NFL star of the same name, he was supposed to be an elite player right away, and he was. He’s not huge…but he was able to hold up when picked on with nine broken up passes and 17 tackles in a true freshman season. And now he gets to start on a regular basis."
It’s almost amazing to consider how loaded FSU football is at the defensive back position that you have both of these players – both the children of those who played both in the NFL and Canadian Football League – listed ahead of a group that includes Levonta Taylor, who was the top recruit in the country from the class of 2016.
It’s also almost amazing when you consider that the Seminoles have two of the top defensive backs in the country and still finished last season with the No. 114th ranked pass defense in the FBS.
So, the best way to look at things for the Noles in 2019 is that the DBU theme sticks around – and there is nowhere to go but up in the rankings.
