FSU Football: Bobby Bowden throwing ‘The U’ is quite cringe worthy
By Jason Parker
Legendary former FSU football coach Bobby Bowden got caught on camera doing the famous hand gesture for a hated rival of the Seminoles and it’s disturbing.
For 34 seasons, Bobby Bowden was the man who turned around a FSU football program that had officials wondering if they would be better off not fielding a team into a program that had numerous accomplishments that included national titles, ACC championships and so many more than can be mentioned right here.
Along those same lines, Bowden also built the Seminoles into a team that competed on the field with the two hated rivals of the Noles from the Sunshine State – the rival Florida Gators and Miami Hurricanes, finishing his time in Tallahassee with a 17-18-1 record against the Gators and a 14-21 record against the ‘Canes.
I’m not even going to get into how many of those losses for FSU football against Miami were either by a missed kick (five to be exact) or a missed two point conversation (1987…damn) because it was a series that defined college football in the Sunshine State – and created a rivalry where the teams don’t like each other, but still respect each other as weird as that may be.
BUT…that level of respect got tested a couple days ago when Bowden was met by one of his former players for the Seminoles in Todd Stroud – a man who was a captain of the 1985 Noles and now is the assistant head coach and defensive line coach for, you guessed it, the Miami Hurricanes.
Stroud took advantage in his meeting with the 89-year-old legendary coach and had him throw up a rather disturbing image (viewer discretion should be advised).
I mean…hold on, give me one second…watching the man who built FSU football into the legendary program that it is today and saved the Seminoles from being abolished from being a team doing that God awful move is just so emotional rough. I’m going to need another moment.
Okay, I’m over it. The truth of the matter is that Bowden showed his true side on this one by doing what was asked of him by a legendary former player of his for the Seminoles who turned on the garnet and gold and forget where he came from (beating the Noles both times the teams met in Tallahassee during his time there).
If anything, Bowden rose above and swallowed his pride to do what was asked of him in this moment with a former player who did show the legend the proper respect in the message expressing his love for Bobby (yeah, that’s the way we’re going to go with this one).
