FSU Football: Tate Martell getting roasted after bad Miami scrimmage

FSU Football fans are chuckling like crazy about their hated rival’s golden transfer quarterback playing like hot garbage this weekend.

While FSU football fans have been patiently waiting to find out when transfer quarterback Jordan Travis will be eligible to play for the Seminoles – at this rate, the 2021 season might be a safe bet with as long as the NCAA is taking – our friends down at the University of Miami have been grinning from ear to ear about their transfer QB, Tate Martell.

Since leaving the Ohio State Buckeyes earlier this year because he was afraid of competition – okay, the exact reason was because the school stopped paying attention to him when they got Justin Fields to transfer in from Georgia (do you blame them) – Martell has been treated as the man who is going to rebuild the ‘Canes offense by many in orange and green.

After the latest spring scrimmage in South Florida, he might be fighting for the best spot on the bench at this rate.

As FSU football enjoys the rest of the spring off before their spring game, the ‘Canes held their second scrimmage of the practice season last weekend at a stadium on the north campus of Miami-Dade College – and Martell looked like he couldn’t even start for that school (and they don’t even have a football team, so that shows you how bad he was).

Martial went an “impressive” 4 for 11 passing for 78 yards with a touchdown and interception each and looked bad for most of the game by those covering the action.

Martell and the rest of the quarterbacks didn’t exactly burn up the scoreboard as the three players – Martell, N’Kosi Perry and Jarren Williams – combined to go 20 for 38 in the scrimmage for 235 total yards and the one touchdown and interception from the golden child.

Martell has gone from the new hero in Coral Gables to someone that might be struggling to be second string at this point, something that was emphasized by our friends over at Canes Warning in their recap after Saturday’s action.

"Martell’s luster is starting to wane after being a highly publicized transfer in January. He should still be considered the favorite to start but Williams and Perry have done far more this spring to earn the first-team spot on the depth chart. Martell continues to struggle with his accuracy."

Now, we in the FSU football family can laugh at the struggles based on all the hype that surrounded Martell’s arrival in Coral Gables – and because we’re still waiting for our approval on Travis – but the truth of the matter is it is still beyond too early to label the move a mistake at all and we all need to take a deep breath and realize there is still a long way go to.

But for a moment – an amazing moment where our hated rivals in orange and green are losing their minds – we can smile and hope it carries over to November 2nd.
