FSU Football: Wide Receiver breakdown from 2019 class
FSU football only added one player at this important offensive position with #Tribe19, but that was mostly because of all the talent already on the team.
The 2019 recruiting class for FSU football demonstrates the Seminoles and head coach Willie Taggart’s commitment to fill gaps in certain areas. Significant gains were made on the offensive line, where the Noles will return 11 players, including their top two, Landon Dickerson and Cole Minshew.
For 2019, Florida State has now added six more offensive linemen, including four offensive tackles, a position where the Noles desperately needed depth. The secondary is now loaded with talent with the Noles signing players such as five-star Akeem Dent, and four-stars Raymond Woodie III, Brendan Gant, and Travis Jay.
Understandably, Florida State did not recruit as hard in positions where they already have great talent depth, and this includes the running back and wide receiver positions. In reality, it was better to save scholarships for positions that truly needed depth added such as the offensive line.
Florida State Seminoles Football
Florida State did not walk away empty-handed on receivers either with Maurice Goolsby from Dunnellon, Florida signing with the team. Goolsby will be a nice addition to the team, especially with the Noles losing Nyqwan Murray this year. His senior year he had 345 receiving yards on 17 receptions, with 43.1 yards per game.
Even with Murray now graduated, the Noles will still return a lot of elite talent at the wide receiver position this year. Wide receivers were one of the only bright spots for the team last year. Florida State still has 15 wide receivers on their roster, including talent such as Tamorrion Terry, who had 35 receptions last year and a team-high 744 yards, and led the team with eight touchdowns. This of course includes the 74-yard game winning catch against Boston College.
The Noles also have talent coming back such as Keyshawn Helton, who managed to gain a lot of attention last year with 11 passes for 176 yards and one touchdown and a season-high 100 yards on three receptions including a 73-yard touchdown against Clemson.
Also, Keith Gavin who had 26 passes for 415 yards and one touchdown and D.J. Matthews will also return for the Noles after recording 42 passes for 382 yards in 2018 with one touchdown, and returning 19 punts for 257 yards and one touchdown. Finally, the Noles also have Tre’Shaun Harrison who had ten passes for 66 yards and one touchdown.
Even better is the fact that former Noles star Ron Dugans is now home to coach the wide receivers. Getting him back to Tallahassee with the talent on the current roster should make an impact in 2019.
With all of that, the 2019 class only including one receiver and Florida State only losing one receiver should not affect the Noles too much with the amount of depth and talent they have already on the roster. Even with the failure to sign a quarterback, a huge blow to the Noles, the 2019 class filled depth in positions that were needed.
A complaint of fans for a while now was previous recruiting cycles continuing to load wide receiver and running back talent with less attention being paid to the offensive line. The 2019 class shows that that tide has now turned, which is actually one of the bright spots of Signing Day.
